Wood refinishing that brings the grain back into the room.
When the wood has solid character, refinishing restores warmth, depth, and lasting protection without replacing the piece. Every project starts with a private, non-binding photo review.
Send clear photos of the overall piece, the tabletop surface, and close-ups of any chips or damage. Initial reviews are completely free and non-binding ā we assess wood feasibility, repair scope, and finish options before any commitment.

Reading the wood: Solid timber vs. vintage veneer.
Successful refinishing starts by knowing exactly what material is under the old finish. Vintage furniture requires different techniques depending on how it was built.
Solid Hardwood Pieces
Solid oak, walnut, maple, and cherry have timber depth that allows thorough stripping, neutralizing, and progressive hand sanding directly along the natural wood grain to reveal fresh, vibrant pores ready for stain.
Fine Vintage Veneer
Many 1920sā1950s case goods (such as our Grand Rapids mahogany sleigh dresser refinishing project) feature bookmatched walnut or mahogany veneers. These require gentle hand-stripping and controlled sanding to avoid edge sand-through, often paired with subtle toning to balance tone variations.
Surface Preparation & Minor Repairs
We avoid harsh dip tanks that dissolve animal hide glue and loosen vintage joinery. Instead, we use controlled hand application, followed by cosmetic repairs: filling minor chips, edge dings, water stains, and scratches with stainable wood filler or epoxy putty before staining.
Durable Seal & Moisture Protection
In the Pacific Northwest, seasonal humidity shifts require resilient sealing. We apply hand-rubbed and sprayed urethane or acrylic protective topcoats in Matte or Satin that resist water rings and daily use while preserving natural grain depth.
Pieces that thrive with wood refinishing.
Refinishing is ideal when the underlying wood species has handsome grain patterns and the piece is structurally sound for daily life.
- Solid oak, walnut, and cherry dressers, buffets, and sideboards
- Dining tables, coffee tables, and desks with worn or yellowed lacquer
- Mid-century credenzas with rich walnut grain ready for tone clearing
- Vintage case pieces needing minor chip fills, surface smoothing, and hardware refresh
Real wood refinishing transformations from our Olympia studio.
From Danish modern credenzas to hand-carved heritage hardwood nightstands, we preserve authentic timber character with clear, durable protective finishes.
What we look for in your photos.
You don't need woodworking terminology. Clear photos taken in natural daylight allow us to evaluate wood type, finish failure, and repair feasibility accurately.

Top Surface Angle
A photo angled across the tabletop or dresser top toward a light source to show water rings, scratches, or cloudy varnish.
Close-Up of Chips or Damage
Focused photos of any veneer chips, gouges, or damaged edges so we can assess filler compatibility.
Drawers & Hardware
A photo of drawer joints (dovetails) or manufacturer stamps, plus original hardware pulls.
