Wood Grain & Surface Prep

Restoring warm wood cabinets, tables, and dressers without losing their character.

Many vintage cabinets, consoles, and dressers in Tumwater homes are built from solid hardwood or quality hardwood veneer that simply suffers from cloudy lacquer, water rings on tabletops, or brass pulls dulled by decades of tarnish. We inspect each piece to determine whether the wood grain should be stripped, tone-corrected, and sealed in a natural wood finish—or whether patched veneer and mixed secondary woods make a custom painted or two-tone finish the stronger choice.

Confirmed repair scope: As part of full surface preparation, we handle minor cosmetic and drawer repairs—rebuilding small chips or gouges with wood putty or Bondo and easing sticking wooden drawer runners. We do not take on major structural joinery failures, broken chair frames, swollen particleboard, or upholstery.

What to photograph before bringing a piece from Tumwater.

Before lifting a heavy dresser or table, send a straight-on full photo, a close-up of any water marks or edge chips in natural light, and a photo inside an open drawer (see our photo guide). Our photo review is free and preliminary—not a binding quote—and helps us confirm whether the piece is solid lumber or veneer, recommend the right finish path, and arrange either a scheduled Olympia studio drop-off or local pickup and delivery.

Tumwater Restoration Questions

Can my furniture keep its natural wood grain instead of being painted?

Yes. When a dresser, table, or cabinet has sound solid lumber or intact hardwood veneer, we often recommend stripping failing topcoats, correcting uneven orange or dark factory toner, and applying a protective clear finish that highlights the natural grain.

Can I drop off my piece in Olympia from Tumwater, or do you coordinate pickup?

Both options are available. Because our private studio is right next door in Olympia, many Tumwater clients arrange a scheduled studio drop-off after their photo review, or we can coordinate local pickup and delivery starting at a $45 one-way minimum ($85 round-trip minimum) or $2.70 per transport mile.

What minor repairs can be handled before refinishing or painting?

During surface preparation we address sticking wooden drawers, small veneer edge chips, and surface gouges using wood putty or two-part Bondo depending on whether the piece will be stained or painted. We do not perform major structural joinery reconstruction, spindle turning, or upholstery.
