Modern Finish & Prep Scope

Giving older solid-wood furniture a sharper presence for contemporary rooms.

Well-built vintage dressers, writing desks, and sideboards have dovetailed drawers and solid timber frames that outlast modern flat-pack furniture (compare solid wood vs. particle board), even when their original orange varnish or dated hardware no longer fits a contemporary DuPont home. We focus on thorough surface preparation, bonding and tannin-blocking primers, smooth painted or two-tone finishes, and natural wood refinishing.

Confirmed repair scope: Before any finish goes on, we handle minor cosmetic and drawer repairs—filling surface gouges, edge chips, or plugged hardware holes flush with two-part Bondo or wood putty and adjusting sticking wooden drawer slides. We do not perform major structural frame reconstruction, broken leg joinery, upholstery, or particleboard repairs.

Free Preliminary Review

Start with photos before transporting furniture down I-5.

Send a full front photo of the piece, a close-up of the top surface or chipped edges, and a shot of the current drawer pulls and interior joinery (see our photo submission guide). Our photo review is free and preliminary—not a binding quote—and lets us confirm construction quality, recommend finish and hardware options, and plan either a scheduled Olympia drop-off or DuPont pickup and delivery.

DuPont Restoration Questions

Why does a satin or matte black finish require so much surface preparation?

Dark architectural finishes highlight every underlying dent, scratch, or uneven patch. Before spraying or brushing a dark enamel, we degrease the wood, fill minor dings and chips flush with Bondo or wood putty, sand through progressive grits, and apply a high-adhesion barrier primer.

Can outdated pulls be replaced with modern hardware if the hole spacing is different?

When a dresser or desk is receiving an opaque painted finish, we can plug non-standard vintage hardware holes and drill new center-to-center spacing for contemporary solid-brass pulls. On natural stained wood, we either polish the original brass or source hardware that matches the existing hole centers.

How do DuPont clients start a project with your Olympia studio?
