Solid Wood vs Particle Board: What Can Be Restored?
The material underneath the finish changes the safest restoration path. Some pieces can be refinished, some can be painted well, and some are not worth heavy work.

Solid wood
Solid wood usually gives the most options. It can often handle more prep, surface repair, wood-tone preservation, or a painted finish if the style calls for it.
Quality veneer
Veneer can be worth saving when it is stable and attractive. The key is caution: aggressive sanding can burn through it, so the finish plan needs to respect the surface.
Particle board and laminate
Some particle board or laminate pieces can be cosmetically improved, but they are usually weaker candidates for premium restoration. Swelling, peeling, and crumbling edges are warning signs.
